Ken, Thanks for this Herculean/Googlesque feat of scanning!
It looks like we now have all our ALDs scanned for both 1401 systems!(?)
Plus most/all(?) of the potpourri of other hardware docs that we have in the racks.Robert, I've scanned all the ALDs and most of the docs in the back room. I skipped some of documents that already had versions online. I only scanned a couple of the 729 manuals since they are all fairly similar, and the paper doesn't work well with the scanner's auto-feeder. If there's anything missing that you want scanned, just let me know.
The most interesting document I came across was the Machine Record Card for the CT 1401, which lists the service visits and when all the different features were added. For instance, in February 1963, the 1406 storage and the multiplication/division feature were added. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B34cSOYVmJIOaFFXXzB6NGh3Z3c
I’m not sure how I can adequately thank you via email, but THANK YOU !!!
(How many hours of scanning did this take? Whose scanner did you use?
Did you scan the original ALDs from storage or the copies in our lab?)Scanning took a lot more time than I expected. I used a Ricoh scanner at Google that feeds pages and scans pretty fast. One problem is the ALDs are full of post-it notes, punch cards used as bookmarks, and relay contacts taped to a page (seriously), so I had to do a fair amount of removing stuff and putting it back (in case it was important). Assembling the scanned pages back into PDFs was also a lot harder than I expected. Part of the problem was the scanner breaks the scans into chunks of about 15 pages.
I didn't take good notes as I was scanning, so I had to keep going back to the lab to figure out which scans were part of which documents. I wanted to include OCR so I used Omnipage, but it is a difficult piece of software. I ended up writing some C# programs to manipulate the PDFs the way I wanted. Now that I have everything mostly figured out, I can scan things pretty fast. The take-away message from this to anyone else doing scans is setting up the process/workflow was the hard part.
I used the ALD copies from the lab, so the quality is not the best. The scans do a pretty good job of replicating the bad quality of the ALDs in the lab :-)

And another
> p.s. Ed —> You’re dup'ing these on the 1401 site? ;-)) Yes - they are at

Linked from
http://ibm-1401.info/#1401-Hardware-System
and
http://ibm-1401.info/new.htmlI wanted to polish up the page a little ;-))
Since I have scanned a bit in my day ;-)
I have first hand knowledge of the
enormous level of effort, and mental focus,
is required to do what Ken did - outstanding -
Stan found one upside-down page in that whole thing - now fixed ;-))
We also consulted with Paul McJones
about the resolution required for a good visual representation -
The original scanned volume at 300 and 600 dpi was 2.02 GBytes,
the reduced resolution volume for the web site is 0.77 GBytes
Ken is retaining the original version for better OCRing -
Does CHM offer "Hero Medals"?
If so, some are due the 1401 restoration and demo teams !! :-))
