1401 Demo Power-on
Procedure
V3, 12/22/09
R. Garner
1) System power on procedure:
a) In the AC circuit breaker panel in the
far back corner near the entrance, move the wide arm on the appropriate 3-phase
circuit breaker to the ON position
(to left). Note that there is a breaker for the German system
(DE 1401) and another one for the Connecticut system (CT 1401).
b) If powering on the DE 1401:
i) At the bottom of the Pacific Power
60->50 Hz Converter, move the arm on the large circuit breaker to the ON position (to left).
ii) At the top of the Pacific Power
60->50 Hz Converter, turn on the Converter’s output by momentarily
depressing its green POWER ON push button at the top. Note that the
three voltage meters (one for each phase) should each indicate about 220 V
(line to neutral).
c) The lamp on top of the appropriate CPU
should be illuminated, which indicates that the system has AC power. WARNING:
All AC outlets are now energized and peripherals have ingress AC
power!
d) Momentarily depress indented yellow POWER ON
button on bottom of 1401 panel. The 1401
and all connected peripherals should now be on and running.
The system only comes up if all power supplies are properly operating and other
safety interlocks. With all the fans
running, it should be fairly noisy.
WARNING: Ferroresonant power supplies in several of the units (1401,
1402, 729) pack lethal power levels.
2.
1401
CPU initialization:
a. Rotate white “mode” rotary switch until
it is in the RUN position.
b. Rotate white “tape unit select"
rotary switch until it is in
the N position.
c. Momentarily depress shiny START RESET push button.
d. Optional: Momentarily depress yellow I ADD REG button.
3.
1402
Card Reader Unit initialization and card setup:
a. Turn on 1402 card reader: Depress READER
ON (down) side of rocker switch on front panel.
b. Clear the reader of any cards that may
have been left from last use:
i. Remove any cards present in the read
hoppers.
ii. Remove card weight and any cards left
in the card read station
iii. Close reader gate (move bar up), and
iv. Momentarily depress NON PROC RUN OUT (down) side of rocker
switch on front panel. Remove any new
cards from the hopper.
c. Open (lower) reader gate and place
punched-card deck in face down, 9 or bottom edge first/towards reader card
picker.
d. Place card weight over cards and close
(up) reader gate. (If there are only a few cards, add ~inch of blank cards to
increase weight.)
e. Momentarily depress CHECK RESET (up) side of rocker switch
on front panel
4.
1403
Printer initialization and setup for aligning paper for BigPrint demo:
a. Open 1403 cover.
b. It’s likely that the paper is already
properly aligned for the BigPrint demo program and you can skip to step
“c”. If not, here’s the paper carriage
alignment procedure:
i. If not already, pull the black ball on
the “Print Unit Release Lever” on left side away from paper to de-energize
chain motor and move the print unit outward about an inch.
ii. Rotate large black “Feed Clutch” knob
on the right counterclockwise into AUS or NEUTRAL, “6 LINE” position to
disengage carriage feed clutch.
iii. Rotate the black PAPER ADVANCE knob on
right appropriately so that line 33 shows just above the left top “forms
tractor”.
iv. Momentarily depress CARRIGE RESTORE
button on 1403 panel.
v. Rotate large black “Feed Clutch” knob
on the right clockwise into EIN or DRIVE, “6 LINE” position to engage carriage
feed clutch.
c. Push black ball on “Print Unit Release
Lever” on left towards paper to move print unit inward about an inch to
energize chain motor and enable printing. The 1403 will not operate if the
release lever is not engaged.
d. Verify that the PRINT READY status
light is illuminated. If not check for
complete closure of all four paper tractors.
If FORMS CHECK light was on, clear it by momentarily depressing CHECK RESET.
e. Close cover.
5.
If
running a tape demo program, here’s the 729 Tape Unit initialization procedure. Otherwise
skip to step “6”.
a. Verify supply tape has a write enable
ring and mount it on left supply hub.
b. Depress supply tape unlock push button
to the lower left of supply reel.
c. Feed tape straight over tape heads and
then clockwise into right take-up reel, so it hangs down from hub center.
d. Pressing the tape against the hub,
depress supply tape unlock push button while hand rotating take-up reel
clockwise several rotations. Remove
finger and continue rotating until the reflective tape mark has moved past the
read head.
e. Close door and close sliding glass
front cover upward.
(If door drops down, it may be necessary to actuate the door sensor in the
upper left by momentarily pushing it to the left.)
f. Momentarily depress RESET, then LOAD
REWIND, and then START buttons. The head
assembly should lower, the tape should drop into the vacuum columns, and it
should move left until the load point marker is sensed.
g. Verify READY light is illuminated.
6.
Load
cards to begin demo:
a. Depress LOAD switch on 1402 front panel
to read-in cards.
b. Momentarily depress START button on
1401 or 1402 or 1403 to begin program execution. Some demo programs require additional STARTs.
1401
Demo Power-down Procedure
7.
Unmount the tape drive(s) by
momentarily depressing RESET and then UNLOAD.
The tape should first be rewound (high speed if 1/2 inch of tape on
takeup reel), then when rewound to load point marker, lifted out of the vacuum
columns and the tape heads raised.
8.
Open the 1403 door and disengage the
1403 print chain by pulling pull
the black ball on the “Print Unit Release Lever” on left side away from paper
to de-energize chain motor and move the print unit outward about an inch.
9.
On the 1401, rotate white “mode” rotary switch until
it is in the ALTER position.
10.On
the 1401, momentarily push the POWER OFF
button. All the fans should be off. It should be fairly quiet now.
11.At
the circuit breaker panel, move
the wide arm on the appropriate 3-phase circuit breaker to the OFF position (to right). The light on top of the 1401(s) should be
off.
12.Confirm that all 026 key punch units
are turned off (toggle switches up).
13.Turn off Computer Room A/C units, if
they were on.
14.Record in activity in the 1401 log
book.
15.Close both doors.
